Engineering discussion

Context before component selection.

N07718 is not a B564 flange-grade substitution

Inconel 718 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel alloy whose forging route is associated with ASTM B637 rather than the corrosion-resistant alloy forging scope used for grades such as N06625. The purchase order must preserve the correct standard, condition, treatment, and mechanical acceptance basis.

Heat-treatment condition drives the procurement discussion

Strength and microstructure depend on processing and heat-treatment history. A serious RFQ states the required condition, applicable specification or drawing notes, machining allowances, final heat treatment sequence, test coupons, mechanical tests, hardness or NDE requirements, and any purchaser hold points.

Standard flange dimensions still need a design check

Matching an ASME flange envelope does not by itself establish pressure-temperature suitability for N07718. Material listings, allowable stresses, joint loading, bolting, gasket, bore transition, fatigue, and project code requirements require engineering confirmation for the actual service.

Standards and release

Define the basis, then document it.

ASTM B637 / ASME SB637

Use the precipitation-hardening nickel alloy forging route for N07718 and state the required grade, condition, heat treatment, mechanical acceptance, and supplementary tests.

Dimensions and design

Confirm whether the flange follows an ASME dimensional standard or an engineered drawing, and reconcile the material with the governing pressure-temperature design basis.

Process records

Heat treatment, machining sequence, NDE, dimensions, hardness or mechanical evidence where specified, marking, and certificate traceability should form a coherent release dossier.

Buyer questions

Frequently asked questions.

Which ASTM route is relevant to Inconel 718 forgings?

ASTM B637 covers precipitation-hardening and cold-worked nickel alloy bars, forgings, and forging stock and includes UNS N07718. State the required condition and edition.

Should Inconel 718 flanges be ordered to ASTM B564?

Do not default to B564. N07718 forging requirements are controlled through the appropriate B637 route or another project-approved specification.

Why must heat-treatment condition be stated for N07718?

The alloy is precipitation hardenable, so processing and condition are central to mechanical acceptance, machining, testing, and certificate review.

What should an Inconel 718 flange RFQ include?

Provide the drawing, material standard and condition, dimensions, design pressure and temperature, facing, bore, heat treatment, mechanical and NDE tests, inspection, quantity, documents, and destination.
