Engineering discussion

Context before component selection.

N06022 selection starts with the complete chemical environment

Hastelloy C22 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum material with tungsten and is known for broad resistance across oxidizing and non-oxidizing chemical contexts. Concentration, contaminants, temperature, aeration, crevices, and upset conditions still determine whether it is appropriate for a specific flange joint.

C22 and C276 should not be merged into one commercial item

Both are nickel-chromium-molybdenum corrosion-resistant alloys, but they have distinct UNS identities, chemistry, performance envelopes, and project histories. A substitution requires a documented engineering comparison of the actual medium, welding, code, product form, and acceptance requirements.

Surface and documentation requirements can be service-critical

State machining finish, facing geometry, cleaning, contamination control, marking method, PMI extent, any corrosion or NDE testing, and protected packing. The release record should preserve heat identity and inspection evidence without introducing unapproved contact materials.

Standards and release

Define the basis, then document it.

ASTM B564 / ASME SB564

The current forging scope includes UNS N06022. Confirm active edition, grade, heat treatment, mechanical acceptance, and any supplementary examination in the order.

ASME B16.5 / drawing

Define flange geometry, pressure class, facing, bore, gasket interface, and dimensions separately from the corrosion-resistant material specification.

Corrosion test basis

Any corrosion test, acceptance criterion, NACE review, cleaning, or surface requirement must be named by the project; it is not implied by the alloy designation.

Buyer questions

Frequently asked questions.

Is UNS N06022 included in ASTM B564?

Yes. The current ASTM B564 forging scope lists N06022. The order should still state edition, condition, dimensions, tests, and supplementary requirements.

Can Hastelloy C22 be substituted for C276 automatically?

No. Compare process chemistry, temperature, contaminants, fabrication, code, corrosion data, and project approvals before any substitution.

Does the alloy name guarantee corrosion performance?

No. Material approval depends on the real chemical environment, concentration, temperature, crevice conditions, flow, contaminants, and project criteria.

What should a C22 flange RFQ include?

Provide UNS grade, material standard, flange form, size, class, facing, bore, dimensions, medium and temperature, inspection, corrosion tests if required, documents, packing, and destination.
